The Battle of Gibraltar, 25th April 1607 - Cornelis Claesz van Wieringen - Framed Print - 12"H x 16"W

Cornelis Claesz van Wieringen was a Dutch Golden Age painter.

Van Wieringen was the son of a Haarlem captain, and drew, painted and etched with his friends Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem.

He specialized in paintings depicting ships and sea battles, and received orders from the municipal councils of Haarlem and Amsterdam. He painted the most popular picture of the Damiaatjes legend of Haarlem, showing how a Haarlem ship broke the protective chain at Domyat during the Fifth Crusade, resulting in an important victory.

The naval Battle of Gibraltar took place on 25 April 1607 during the Eighty Years' War when a Dutch fleet surprised and engaged a Spanish fleet anchored at the Bay of Gibraltar. During the four hours of action, most of the Spanish ships were destroyed.
