The National Theater is on Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich, and is home of the Bavarian State Opera, Bavarian State Orchestra and the Bavarian State Ballet.
The first theatre was commissioned in 1810 by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, it was designed by Karl von Fischer. Construction began in 1811 and opened in 1818, but was soon destroyed by fire on 14 January 1823; the fire could not be put out because the water supply was frozen. Coincidentally the Paris Odéon itself burned down in 1818.
In 1825 a second theatre was designed Leo von Klenze, and built. The building was gutted in an air raid on the night of 3 October 1943.
The third theatre was built in 1963 and recreates Karl von Fischer's original neo-classical design.
