White Peacock (Oriental Art) - Rakusan Tsuchiya - Framed Plate - 12"H x 16"W

Rakusan Tsuchiya (Born Kouzou Tsuchiya) was a Japanese artist. He had other "artist names" which included Rakuzan Koushisei, Koushisei, Rakusan, Rakuzan.

He is known for his beautiful and refined nature studies and he studied under the great Kyoto artist Seiho Takeuchi.

The peafowl is of the genera Pavo and Afropavo of the Phasianidae family. They are known for the male's piercing call and extravagant eye-spotted tail covert feathers which he displays as part of a courtship ritual. The term peacock is properly reserved for the male; the female is known as a peahen, and the immature offspring are sometimes called peachicks.

Occasionally, peafowl appear with white plumage; they have a different condition called leucism which causes an overall reduction in different types of pigment. This can result in the complete lack of colouration of their plumage, however preserving normal eye colour.
