German Sheperd - Framed Print - 14"H x 11"W

The German Shepherd (Deutscher Schäferhund) is a breed of medium to large-sized working dog that originated in Germany. The breed's officially recognized name is German Shepherd Dog and was also formerly known as the Alsatian in Britain.

The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to 1899.  German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep, that are strong, intelligent, trainable, and obedient

German Shepherds were bred specifically for their intelligence, a trait for which they are now famous. Also the breed is marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. They are curious, which makes them excellent guard dogs and suitable for search missions.

At the conclusion of World War I, it was believed that the inclusion of the word "German" would harm the breed's popularity, due to the anti-German sentiment of the era. The breed was officially renamed to "Alsatian Wolf Dog", after the French region of Alsace.
